First off thanks for the good question Dave, In my experience the Bench press although an amazing exercise I do not find it necessary for Bmx. With this being said I do believe the bench press to being a vital lift into ones quest to get bigger and stronger, I feel its applications to the BMXer are very limited.
To accurately answer this question you have to asses were you are in your training, The best use of the bench press for a BMXer is if you are trying to add a little upperbody size in the off season. If you are trying to specifically training for your upcoming season I would choose either a Pushup variation, or A dumbell version. Here are some Finer points to each:
Push-up:
These are staple upperbody movement and I go over about 10 different variations in my DVD BMX Strong. The reason I see these to be far superior is the core stabilization that occurs when doing a pushup. During a push-up you have to stabilize from head to toe, which activates more muscle, and teaches your body to fire as a unit and not just a bodypart. Plus the push-up is an exercise you can do anywhere wihtout the requirement of equipment.
Dumbell Bench:
This exercise although I dont rank it as high as a push-up in terms of BMX specific is an excelent choice for upperbody size and strength. The Dumbell bench activates the unilateral aspect and forces your stabilizer muscles to work extra hard to press the dumbells up. A variation of these that I highly recommend is do them with your back on a stability ball, these are extra fun.
So next time you are evaluating your training ,check your ego at the door and remember, no one cares what you can bench.
