I just wanted to let you know of my experiences with what I’ve learned at elitefts.com. My name is Brian Schaefle and I race in the 36 & Over Expert class in the ABA. I live in Bakersfield, CA. I raced throughout junior high and high school when I was a kid but I let it drop when I went to college. I picked BMX back up again in 1995 and based just on my natural ability I was probably a mid-level intermediate. I started looking for training information but scientific methods have always been in short supply in BMX. I started looking at training for other cycling disciplines and then at training for the sprint events in track and field. This led me to the Olympic lifts and finally to Charlie Francis. Ultimately I heard about Westside Barbell through this research and then Elite Fitness. I’ve read all the articles on that site and the Q&A section. Particularly guys like Dave Tate, Jim Wendler and James Smith. I got a power rack and made a home-made sled. I pushed my pickup truck and started using Westide methods to get strong. Amazingly enough I started to get faster on the track too. Guys that used to beat me consistently I started to draw even with and eventually beat.
This culminated with me turning expert and never missing a main event again. Then in 2006 I won the Race of Champions, got third at the Grands and got a NAG 4 plate. This was my best year in BMX and it was because I was the strongest I had ever been and the most explosive I had ever been.
I know that you know these methods work I just wanted to give you further evidence. It’s nice to finally see someone putting it together with BMX. I’ve kind of kept my training program hid but lately I’ve been thinking about helping some local guys who are good riders but lack power.
